The uniqueness of ayurveda lies in its holistic approach considering the Body, Mind and Soul which together constitutes an individual. This time tested science has its base in Indian philosophy, comprising the “Panchamahabhoota theory” which have been conceived to the “Tridosha theory” by ancient Ayurvedic Scholars. The Tridosha theory thus forms the basis of Ayurvedic Medicine.
The Tridoshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, together, in a balanced state, they accounts for health and when imbalanced then that results in diseases or aliments.
The tridoshas maintains and controls all the body functions. So when they get vitiated or disturbed due to various reasons, an imbalance is created in the human system leading to exhibition of various symptoms indicative of the dosha vitiation.
The factors contributing to a disease are numerous like unhealthy diet and regimen, environmental factors, allergens, microorganisms, mental disturbances etc. So when the body is exposed to any of these causative factors, that result in the vitiation of the doshas, whatever the reasons may be. The importance of this view is that a trained Ayurvedic physician will be able to arrive at an idea about the involvement of doshas, analyzing the symptoms. So whatever the diseases are, the causes may be, the understanding of the disease lies on the understanding of the dosha vitiation involved.
Further, in different individuals, the symptoms of the same dosha vitiation may vary depending on the Prakriti or constitution of that individual. So the treatment of a very same disease may vary from person to person. So before a treatment or medicine is prescribed for a person, the physician will analyze all these factors to arrive at the right choice. That explains the holistic approach of Ayurvedic treatments.
Ayurveda is propounded not only as a curative science but as a preventive one also. Along with mentioning numerous healing therapies and medicines, much more is explained about maintenance of positive health. Many therapies, regimen, diets etc. are explained in Ayurveda to ensure the health and keep the body resist the diseases.
Precisely speaking Ayurveda is not only a medical science, but a way of living which helps man attain physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. And hence it is rightly called as a unique system of medicine.
